Julie Akeret has just completed Henry Spira: He Speaks for All Species, the first segment of an hour-long documentary which will profile three little-known but successful social activists and their strategies for change. Henry Spira has been one of the most effective animal rights activists of our time. Akeret's twenty-three minute film shows how Spira's straightforward approach succeeded in ending experiments on live animals at the Museum of Natural History and Revlon Cosmetics.
Julie Akeret won numerous awards for two previous documentaries, Not Just Garbage, about an artist-in-residence at the New York Sanitation Department, and In Defense of Animals, about the Australian philosopher and animal rights activist Peter Singer.
With the help of a fiscal sponsorship from The Fund for Women Artists, Akeret was able to raise $3,500 from the U.S. Humane Society and $5,500 from individual donors for the Henry Spira film. She is currently seeking funds for the next segment of this project.
