Lizzie Donahue
Videomaker
Videomaker Lizzie Donahue is currently editing Big Panty Exposed, a half-hour satiric video about the girls rock group Big Panty. The Fund for Women Artists helped Donahue obtain a $2,000 grant from the Northampton Arts Council for this project and has agreed to be a fiscal sponsor for other contributions.
Loosely based on the real experiences of four women trying to form a rock band, the video will include rehearsal and performance footage, constructed intimate moments, and interviews with the band members. Donahue's goal is to create an entertaining piece which will illuminate the difficulties of being a woman and an artist in the music industry.
Big Panty Exposed is a natural extension of Donahue's previous work, which has included several comic videos that critique media styles and genres. She has created faux commercials, infomercials, trailers, and other narrative shorts. Her twenty minute faux infomercial I Became a Lesbian and So Can You! has played in eighteen film and video festivals and is now being distributed by Northern Arts Entertainment as part of a home video compilation of lesbian works. Her film noir take-off, Snatched! The Case of the Purloined Pie Plate was screened at the prestigious San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay 20th Anniversary Film Festival in June 1996.
The Fund for Women Artists also helped Donahue obtain a grant of $500 from the Northampton Arts Council for her earlier piece, When I Grow Older, a 10-minute video meditation on the aging process, which aired on Northampton Cable Television. Donahue is currently working in New York as assistant editor at a post-production facility where she is mastering state-of-the-art editing techniques.
